If you are just putting up some green beans to use yourself, then simply writing on the lid with a magic marker works for a canning label. However, if your are going to be giving away gifts of barbecue sauce made from your famous secret recipe, then you might want something fancier.
If you are handy with photo editing software, then you can make personalized labels using 2 inch round adhesive labels This is just the right size to fit on standard lids. For wide mouth jars, 2 1/2 Inch labels work better.
Of course, if photo editing software is too much of a challange, then there are a wide variety of hand written options for canning labels.
What a great idea, Charlotte! Thanks for sharing it with us. Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really neat idea!
ReplyDeleteCharlotte, you are just so groovy. It's that little extra special touch that makes it all look so classy. Well done.
ReplyDeletei just started canning/ pickling and am so glad to have found your site! i have a few books on the subject, but your clear language and guidance are invaluable for sure. i have a question for you: if, after a water bath, the jars of pickled fruits/jam are sticky, should one assume that that the seal is compromised? i rinsed the jars, the lids appear concave and sealed, but i'm not sure, so i threw them in the fridge. what do you think?
ReplyDeleteI would try pulling the lid off with me fingers. If it is tight enough that you need more than just your fingers to pry it off, then it should be fine.
ReplyDeleteyes, i am able to hold the jars by the edge of the lid (without the screw band on) and they hold well, so i guess i'm fine. maybe i filled them too full. thank you!
ReplyDeleteI am looking to purchase canning jars with a handle. I would like to have them embossed with my name and logo. Any suggestions where I can find such a business?
